#Ellos Hablan / #They Speak

Torturador y espejo

Descubrir tu pasión lo cambia todo / How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

I am life without boundaries / Soy una vida sin fronteras

Not me or Mine
This body is not me; I am not caught in this body,
I am life without boundaries,
I have never been born and I have never died.
Over there the wide ocean and the sky with many galaxies
All manifests from the basis of consciousness.
Since beginningless time I have always been free.
Birth and death are only a door through which we go in and out.
Birth and death are only a game of hide-and-seek.
So smile to me and take my hand and wave good-bye.
Tomorrow we shall meet again or even before.
We shall always be meeting again at the true source,
always meet again on the myriad paths of life.

From the Sutta "Given to the Dying" in the Anguttara Nikaya as translated by Thich Nhat Hanh

Nunca he nacido y nunca he muerto.

The Lizard / La Lagartija

On Tuesday I went to Yolotlán, the village where my friends live in the municipality of Tepoztlán. I arrived in a taxi to the entrance of the Hotel El Sitio Sagrado. I got off and walked down the dirt and stone path that leads to the entrance of the Village. Almost at the entrance gate, a green lizard crossed in front of me. Yolotlán is full of lizards, they cross everywhere you walk. For some reason that I do not know, he has given me to converse with the animals that appear in Yolotlán, with the birds, for example. I saw the lizard and I said good morning while I kept walking. The lizard kept walking in front of me, I thought I would run away and hide in the grass, but no, I kept walking quickly in front of me to the right side, as if she was waiting for me to enter the Village. I kept talking with her. A few steps before reaching the entrance gate I stopped because I felt that she continued to listen to me. The lizard stopped in front of the gate and turned to watch me. There I stood for a few moments. I asked him: how are you? Then she crossed in front of me quickly heading towards the brush. I thought the lizard would get into the grass and I would not see it, but no, it stopped and I continued talking with her. I was fascinated because I felt that she continued to listen to me. I took out my cell phone and took a picture. I said goodbye to her and went to the gate to enter the Village. I closed the gate and looked through the bars, the lizard was still there, looking towards where I was. I remembered that at my friend Erica's house I always consult the Medicine Cards to find the meaning of the beings we meet along the way. Now that I'm home, I read the letter: "Lizard is the medicine of dreamers."

Ahora que estoy en casa he leído la carta: "Lizard is the medicine of dreamers."

Joseph Campbell. Los mitos en el tiempo.

"The matter of myth is the matter of our life, the matter of our body and our environment, and a living and vital mythology deals with this in terms appropriate to the nature of the knowledge of the time.
"This woman with her baby is the basic image of mythology. The first experience of anyone is the maternal body. And what Le Debleu called participation mysqtique, mystical participation between the mother and the son and the son and the mother, is the definite happiness. To consider the Earth and the whole Universe as our mother brings this experience to the broader sphere of adult experience. When one can feel oneself related to the Universe in a way as complete and natural as the child with the mother, it is in complete harmony with the Universe. Harmonize and tune in with the Universe, and continue like this, is the main function of mythology. When societies developed out of their primordial condition, the problem was to keep the individual in this participation mystique with society. Now, looking around, we see how unlikely we are to achieve it, especially if we live in a big city."
Joseph Campbell. Transformations of Myths Through Time.

“Non-ordinary logic” / "Lógica no ordinaria"

«During one of my conferences, a psychiatrist presented a case of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and requested that I consult with him about it. He said that he was having a hard time trying to treat a psychiatric patient, who suffered from a severe from of OCD which was creating havoc in his psychiatric unit. The patient was compulsively and repeatedly clapping his hands from day to night. He continually affirmed that this was imperative, since it was the only way “to keep elephants away”. After various and ineffective interventions from the psychiatric nurses to make him stop, the psychiatrist confessed that he that he went up to the patient himself to try and persuade him to stop his ritual. Using ordinary logic, the psychiatrist told the patient, “But you see, there are no elephants, neither her nor in all of Germany.” The patient proudly replied “of course, my clapping works!” And to the psychiatrist´s astonishment, the patient, even more convinced, persisted with his clapping. Even though this bizarre behaviour might seem illogical, it still holds its logic; non-ordinary logic. As we can see with this case, common sense logic did not fit with the underlying “non-ordinary logic” of this particular compulsion.»

"The etymological meaning of the word dialogue, dia-logos, is a discourse between two; the exchange or encounter of intelligence (VonFoerster, 1993), referring to an act of comunication trhough wich a new knowledge is acquiered, and coming to discover together something more than that wich one could ever discover alone."

The doors of mind / Las puertas de la mente

[...] Returning requieres leaving. Stopping needs going, releasing follows holding. Since each arises from other, then speak to find silence, change to know unchanging, empty to become full.

From moment to moment, mind tricks mind and thoughts follow thinking in circles. The way out is in. The way in is out. Through is between.

Take hold of both halves and swing the doors of mind wide open or close shut. Full mind is the same as empty mind.

Grigg, 1988

[...] Regresar requiere marcharse.

An Ilustrated Journal of Four Seasons in Solitud, de Barbara Basch.

When I go to visit my friends' houses, it is impossible for me not to look at the books that are available. I almost always find one or several that catch my attention. In the houses books are always moving, when I realize a new one is calling me. I leaf through them quickly to find what I am looking for or that is looking for me.

Days ago I arrived at my friend's house and when I looked over the desk was one that immediately caught my attention: True Nature. An Illustrated Journal of Four Seasons in Solitude, by Barbara Basch. An unusual book, illustrated by the same author. For a while I was reviewing the book, amazed by the images, by the stories. I was particularly fascinated by the story of the Brown Snake that I am now sharing with you. It reminded me of the story of a companion who a few weeks ago had overcome what she considered snake phobia. Last Thursday I shared with her and other classmates the story that now included. I showed him the beautiful image I took of the book and looked at it without any fear.

Fourth Day
Brown Snake
I eat my lunch sitting on a chair on the front step in the sunshine. Out of the corner of my eye I sense a small movement and then see something glistening —a snake´s glossy eye peering at me just over the edge of the big stone slab I am sitting on. My heart beats faster, but I hold very still, watching it as it watches me.
I am fascinated and trembling. The lord of the underworld has arrived and is speaking to me in his silent language. I am nut frightened, only held in the spell of the moment.
I hear another rustle and slowly turn my head to the right. Now there is a second smaller snake face watching me from the opposite edge of the stone slab. I sit now, surrounded and completely alert, turning my head slowly side to side, observing and being observed.
After ten minutes, both snakes slip down into their dark tracks and then the larger one reappears on my right, head swaying, black tongue flickering the air, it settles its length in full view along the sunny rocks at the edfe of the wall and I sketch it´s long brown pattern. Just as I finish my drawing, it slides slowly away into the long cool grass.
Is there anything more beautiful than a snake moving through the grass?
Barbara Basch. True Nature. An Ilustrated Journal of Four Seasons in Solitud.

Shapeshifters

“... some of us are learning the art of the shapeshifter: reinventing ourselves as needed to step into new roles, resolving dilemmas with a measure of grace, tolerating a great level of ambiguity, and somehow knowing enough about who we are to say our yeses and noes appropriately.”

This is to have succeeded / Esto es haber tenido éxito

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeem social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

Aprender haciendo / Learning by doing

In relation to learning, we have shown that we learn twenty percent of what we listen to, fifty percent of what we see, and eighty percent of what we do. Maybe that's why I'm looking again and again for places where I can expand my capabilities beyond the borders that I've built myself sometimes. There are times when I feel that life leads me to nock doors that will not open to show me new paths, which I might not have dared to go through, if circumstances had not put me there.

El obstáculo es el camino / The obstacle is the way

I'm passionate about conversations. I had not imagined how important they would be in my life. The conversations make me leave my cocoon, go out into the world of others. Listen, try to feel, understand. In a brief encounter it is possible to enter the depths of our souls. I was wondering why in a moment I could hear something so intimate. Most of us have had thousands of conversations in our lives. Some conversations have been difficult, some more tense or aggressive in which I could not build a gentle exit. Human beings seek to be well in our jobs, with our families, with our partner, children, friends, the community, on this planet earth that supports us. During these weeks of May I had a hundred conversations with people from different companies (small, medium, large) of the city where I live with the purpose of looking for jobs for young people who have not had work experience. It has been a challenge to make these conversations and as the days have gone by I have polished the conversations until I feel almost comfortable talking about the project I am working on. So far I have not managed to get any company to accept the proposal, however I discovered something in the business world that has captivated me. I have personally talked only with some people, however, the voice is a magical instrument that allows us to feel them. There are moments of instant confidence in which we can flow freely, in others there is distrust and I confess that I have not known how to overcome it, the only thing I can observe is that there is a distance that grows day by day until the door closes. I felt the desperation and the desire to leave the project. There is an inner part that tells me that I need to continue, to find a path without clinging to the result. In my interior something has softened and my confidence has grown. The personal work that I have developed over the years allows me to return to my center and discover the hidden fears that at times do not allow me to move forward. In less than fifteen days I have built a way to overcome the obstacles that come up one by one. Today, Monday, May 14, has been a day of ups and downs. I called a businesswoman in the morning who had already accepted and signed the agreement and was only pendent to collect the documentation, but today she told me she would not participate, she was the first person to sign, but in an instant the agreement was dissolved. What I can say is that the rejection did not surprise me, I had been observing it for a few days. Then I talked to the owner of a small company with whom I had met last week to present the project to him, he asked me to come tomorrow to collect the documentation, he agreed to participate. On the same day in the afternoon I agreed to a working appointment with a person from a hotel company to review the details of the project, the conversation was very brief, but it seems to me that the way in which I presented the project was interesting, we will meet next Thursday, May 17 in the morning. Persistence is the word that comes to my mind. On Sunday I wrote a reflection about what was happening and what were the obstacles to achieving the goal. Ironically, I used the example of the company that had already signed the agreement to realize that there were results and that this was an example of being on the right track. I remembered what I had written: "If it works, do more of the same" and, "If it does not work, do something different." Will I reach the goal in the set time? I do not know, but having talked with all these people has changed my life.

Making decisions / Tomando decisiones

“The King and the Queen conquer not with aggression or self-interest but with payu –discernment. Payu is the most important tool in life, because being alive involves making one decision after another, knowing what to do and when. If we have not developed a standard for making decisions, we make poor choices based on living life backward –engaging in negative emotions and feeling frustrated that they don´t bring satisfaction.”
Sakyong Mipham. Ruling your world. Ancient strategies for modern life.

Cómo lograr una comunicación memorable / How to achieve a memorable communication

It seems simple, however, in practice it is a challenge to achieve it. In a public speaking course we rehearsed again and again presenting from simple subjects such as the use of tomato-how to cook it, how to sell it, present it or cultivate it-to our most intricate personal experiences, as it can be a dream. It is true, there are other elements to consider, such as mastering the subject, the language used, one that allows people, in a simple way, to follow the story, the use of the body in space, the movements of the hands, the gestures, the nervous tics. During the course we read a book by Ferran Ramón Cortés, who points out the elements to achieve a memorable communication: [1] Have a unique and great message. [2] Through stories make it memorable. [3] Use a language that connects with people. [4] Be aware of what people get and invite them more than trying to convince them. [5] And, the ability to get excited. Ferran's book seems memorable to me.

El maestro del enojo / The teacher of anger

It is early morning and almost all the everyday sounds of the city are still asleep, only the singing of some nocturnal birds and sporadically the engine of some vehicle or the engine of the refrigerator is heard. I got up with the idea of continuing to write about the anger and in that moment a memory came to me. Together with a couple of colleagues we were giving training to a group of people from thirty-six of the most important cities in Mexico who would support us to conduct a survey. It was the last day of the course and one of the colleagues came to tell me that he had to leave because he had another event to attend. At that moment I felt an anger because he had not warned me in advance. I felt so angry that I had to walk around a huge fountain in the facilities where we were giving the training. The colleague who accompanied me and I finished teaching the course but I continued with my anger. At the end she told me to go and celebrate that we had finished. On the way to the hotel where we were staying, I told her that I was very angry because our partner had left us without telling us in advance what his plans were. "You already know how it is", we are going to eat, he said in his sweet and conciliatory voice. When I listened to her I felt even more angry and at the same time I thought she was right, but I needed to release my anger in some way so I asked her to let me rest for a while before going out to eat. I lay on the bed in the room to try to relax and something happened in my body because I fell asleep, although aware that I was lying on the bed. Maybe I was like this for ten or fifteen minutes. I heard the tapping of my colleague approaching the door of my room so I got up to go out to eat. She knocked on the door and we left the hotel to find a restaurant to eat. When we entered the macro plaza I realized that my anger had disappeared and it had become a peace like I had never experienced before, I felt like I was united to the universe, floating in that space of tranquility. Where had my anger gone? In this moment where almost the only sounds I hear are the beating of my heart, the song of the nocturnal bird, I thank my companions for having taught me to find peace.

El cambio mental / The mental change

El arte de escuchar / The art of listening

Convivir y vivir. Citado por Paul Anwandter. Introducción al Coaching Integral.

"We do not know what is good for another unless he or she tells us in a mutual meeting to listen to each other, in a flow of reflective co-inspirations, in which suddenly the serenity of autonomy fills the silence, and the appropriate to do arises alone. "

Aprendizaje desde el corazón y la piel / Learning from the heart and skin

El camino del enojo / The path of anger

Muriel James y Dorothy Jongeward. Nacidos para triunfar.

Years ago, in psychology class, during my last year of high school, we were assigned to read the book Born to Succeed, by Muriel James and Dorothy Jongeward. In the mid-nineties, in a strong personal crisis, I tried to find something that would allow me to work with my anger. I searched the book and in its pages I found the following exercise: lying on your back, slowly raise your arm to about forty-five degrees, then lower it to the same rhythm, repeat the exercise again and again following carefully the movement of the arm. This exercise motivated me to look for the source of the tranquility that I had begun to experience after practicing it on numerous occasions, that is how Tibetan Buddhism came to my life, first through Tony Karam, of Casa Tibet in Mexico and, later, through Shambhala. I followed the path of Shambahala in which I continued to practice. There are different ways to find inner peace, but my heart is still connected to this one that has led me to go beyond my imaginary borders.
"Every human being is born as something new, like something that did not exist before; as a different being endowed with everything necessary to succeed in life. Individually, each person can see, hear, touch, taste and think for themselves. In addition, each has its own potential, its capabilities and limitations. In their own right, each can be an important, thinking, conscious and productively creative person; in a word, it has all the necessary attributes to be a winner. “
