Aprender haciendo / Learning by doing

In relation to learning, we have shown that we learn twenty percent of what we listen to, fifty percent of what we see, and eighty percent of what we do. Maybe that's why I'm looking again and again for places where I can expand my capabilities beyond the borders that I've built myself sometimes. There are times when I feel that life leads me to nock doors that will not open to show me new paths, which I might not have dared to go through, if circumstances had not put me there.

El obstáculo es el camino / The obstacle is the way

I'm passionate about conversations. I had not imagined how important they would be in my life. The conversations make me leave my cocoon, go out into the world of others. Listen, try to feel, understand. In a brief encounter it is possible to enter the depths of our souls. I was wondering why in a moment I could hear something so intimate. Most of us have had thousands of conversations in our lives. Some conversations have been difficult, some more tense or aggressive in which I could not build a gentle exit. Human beings seek to be well in our jobs, with our families, with our partner, children, friends, the community, on this planet earth that supports us. During these weeks of May I had a hundred conversations with people from different companies (small, medium, large) of the city where I live with the purpose of looking for jobs for young people who have not had work experience. It has been a challenge to make these conversations and as the days have gone by I have polished the conversations until I feel almost comfortable talking about the project I am working on. So far I have not managed to get any company to accept the proposal, however I discovered something in the business world that has captivated me. I have personally talked only with some people, however, the voice is a magical instrument that allows us to feel them. There are moments of instant confidence in which we can flow freely, in others there is distrust and I confess that I have not known how to overcome it, the only thing I can observe is that there is a distance that grows day by day until the door closes. I felt the desperation and the desire to leave the project. There is an inner part that tells me that I need to continue, to find a path without clinging to the result. In my interior something has softened and my confidence has grown. The personal work that I have developed over the years allows me to return to my center and discover the hidden fears that at times do not allow me to move forward. In less than fifteen days I have built a way to overcome the obstacles that come up one by one. Today, Monday, May 14, has been a day of ups and downs. I called a businesswoman in the morning who had already accepted and signed the agreement and was only pendent to collect the documentation, but today she told me she would not participate, she was the first person to sign, but in an instant the agreement was dissolved. What I can say is that the rejection did not surprise me, I had been observing it for a few days. Then I talked to the owner of a small company with whom I had met last week to present the project to him, he asked me to come tomorrow to collect the documentation, he agreed to participate. On the same day in the afternoon I agreed to a working appointment with a person from a hotel company to review the details of the project, the conversation was very brief, but it seems to me that the way in which I presented the project was interesting, we will meet next Thursday, May 17 in the morning. Persistence is the word that comes to my mind. On Sunday I wrote a reflection about what was happening and what were the obstacles to achieving the goal. Ironically, I used the example of the company that had already signed the agreement to realize that there were results and that this was an example of being on the right track. I remembered what I had written: "If it works, do more of the same" and, "If it does not work, do something different." Will I reach the goal in the set time? I do not know, but having talked with all these people has changed my life.

Making decisions / Tomando decisiones

“The King and the Queen conquer not with aggression or self-interest but with payu –discernment. Payu is the most important tool in life, because being alive involves making one decision after another, knowing what to do and when. If we have not developed a standard for making decisions, we make poor choices based on living life backward –engaging in negative emotions and feeling frustrated that they don´t bring satisfaction.”

Cómo lograr una comunicación memorable / How to achieve a memorable communication

It seems simple, however, in practice it is a challenge to achieve it. In a public speaking course we rehearsed again and again presenting from simple subjects such as the use of tomato-how to cook it, how to sell it, present it or cultivate it-to our most intricate personal experiences, as it can be a dream. It is true, there are other elements to consider, such as mastering the subject, the language used, one that allows people, in a simple way, to follow the story, the use of the body in space, the movements of the hands, the gestures, the nervous tics. During the course we read a book by Ferran Ramón Cortés, who points out the elements to achieve a memorable communication: [1] Have a unique and great message. [2] Through stories make it memorable. [3] Use a language that connects with people. [4] Be aware of what people get and invite them more than trying to convince them. [5] And, the ability to get excited. Ferran's book seems memorable to me.

El maestro del enojo / The teacher of anger

It is early morning and almost all the everyday sounds of the city are still asleep, only the singing of some nocturnal birds and sporadically the engine of some vehicle or the engine of the refrigerator is heard. I got up with the idea of continuing to write about the anger and in that moment a memory came to me. Together with a couple of colleagues we were giving training to a group of people from thirty-six of the most important cities in Mexico who would support us to conduct a survey. It was the last day of the course and one of the colleagues came to tell me that he had to leave because he had another event to attend. At that moment I felt an anger because he had not warned me in advance. I felt so angry that I had to walk around a huge fountain in the facilities where we were giving the training. The colleague who accompanied me and I finished teaching the course but I continued with my anger. At the end she told me to go and celebrate that we had finished. On the way to the hotel where we were staying, I told her that I was very angry because our partner had left us without telling us in advance what his plans were. "You already know how it is", we are going to eat, he said in his sweet and conciliatory voice. When I listened to her I felt even more angry and at the same time I thought she was right, but I needed to release my anger in some way so I asked her to let me rest for a while before going out to eat. I lay on the bed in the room to try to relax and something happened in my body because I fell asleep, although aware that I was lying on the bed. Maybe I was like this for ten or fifteen minutes. I heard the tapping of my colleague approaching the door of my room so I got up to go out to eat. She knocked on the door and we left the hotel to find a restaurant to eat. When we entered the macro plaza I realized that my anger had disappeared and it had become a peace like I had never experienced before, I felt like I was united to the universe, floating in that space of tranquility. Where had my anger gone? In this moment where almost the only sounds I hear are the beating of my heart, the song of the nocturnal bird, I thank my companions for having taught me to find peace.

El cambio mental / The mental change

El arte de escuchar / The art of listening

El camino del enojo / The path of anger

Muriel James y Dorothy Jongeward. Nacidos para triunfar.

Years ago, in psychology class, during my last year of high school, we were assigned to read the book Born to Succeed, by Muriel James and Dorothy Jongeward. In the mid-nineties, in a strong personal crisis, I tried to find something that would allow me to work with my anger. I searched the book and in its pages I found the following exercise: lying on your back, slowly raise your arm to about forty-five degrees, then lower it to the same rhythm, repeat the exercise again and again following carefully the movement of the arm. This exercise motivated me to look for the source of the tranquility that I had begun to experience after practicing it on numerous occasions, that is how Tibetan Buddhism came to my life, first through Tony Karam, of Casa Tibet in Mexico and, later, through Shambhala. I followed the path of Shambahala in which I continued to practice. There are different ways to find inner peace, but my heart is still connected to this one that has led me to go beyond my imaginary borders.
"Every human being is born as something new, like something that did not exist before; as a different being endowed with everything necessary to succeed in life. Individually, each person can see, hear, touch, taste and think for themselves. In addition, each has its own potential, its capabilities and limitations. In their own right, each can be an important, thinking, conscious and productively creative person; in a word, it has all the necessary attributes to be a winner. “

Las dificultades de la vida cotidiana / The difficulties of everyday life

I was talking yesterday afternoon with a friend about the difficulties that arise in our daily life: the issue of money and unsuccessful attempts at solutions in the paths of the entrepreneur, the blocks to write, the yearning to do what we are passionate about -design, marketing, writing, painting, everyone has a gift or more-. It seems that nothing that has been done works, and I have some experience in this regard, since I have proposed various projects and some have only remained as projects. Again and again we continue trying the same way, and the result is the same: it does not work, we do not get what we want. Among all these unsuccessful attempts at solutions there is an exception to which we have not paid enough attention. This reminds me of some of the ideas in the Solution Focused Approach: (1) Identify what the problem is. ("If it's not broken, do not try to repair it."). (2) If it works, do more of the same. (3) If it does not work, stop doing it and try something different.

Melina

I went into the classroom and began to hear Master Felipe talk about emotional self-regulation and how the brain works.
- Does anyone want to live the process? asked Felipe.
I get angry easily, so I immediately raised my hand. I sat in the chair in front of the group.
-Melina, close your eyes, he said softly, and evokes an image that expresses your anger.
I closed my eyes and suddenly I was in the middle of a total darkness in which a gigantic monster appeared, like a mountain seizing all the space. I felt my body shuddering full of a fierce power about to explode.
-What is the image that you are visualizing? Felipe asked me.
"A dragon," I replied, feeling a runaway energy ready to come out furious, ready to destroy anyone who will cross my path.
- Now, bring to your mind an image that evokes a moment in which you are not angry, I heard Felipe telling me with his soft and playful voice.
The dragon disappeared suddenly and I was again in deep darkness. A small point of light began to shine like a star that little by little was growing giving way to a dark blue that became clear to a blue sky. It was in a valley full of greens everywhere and surrounded by mountains of undulating crests. Whipping my little white wings, I slowly descended to a leafy copal and posed gently on a branch.
I opened my eyes slowly until I realized where I was and a thought arose in my mind: I am Melina, the Dragon and the Butterfly.

Descubrir tu pasión / Discover your passion

Ken Robinson y Lou Aronica. El Elemento. Descubrir tu pasión lo cambia todo.

We are all born with natural talents and, often, most of us have a very limited perception of our own abilities. In this regard Robinson and Aronica point out three limitations. The first is related to the understanding of the scope of the abilities with which we were born, such as imagination, intelligence, emotions, among others. The understanding of how these capacities are related to each other in an integral way, they point out, would be a second limitation. And the third, refers to our poor understanding of the potential we have to grow and change.

The ideas of Robinson and Aronica motivate me to contemplate about the talents with which we have been born and which we have sometimes left forgotten in some drawer. It is time to take them back, update them —as an artisan that sharpens their tools— and integrate them with those that we have continued to use and continue to develop our potential to grow and change in what we are passionate about. What are your talents?
